With no new murders occurring overnight, Regina Muga’s squad were having a relaxed Saturday as well. Peter Ricks was mowing his lawn, Constable Graham was watching porn on his home computer and Chris Jones was fondling Sally Bowles’s breasts, trying to wake her up. He succeeded and, a sweaty hour later, she lay on his chest gasping for breath as he asked, ‘You still pissed at me for suggesting the old folks’ homes thing?’

‘No. It was a good idea. I was just surprised you didn’t mention it over breakfast, that’s all.’

‘Didn’t think of it until I was walking into the office. I wasn’t trying to make you look bad, Sal.’

She kissed a nipple and replied, ‘Fat chance.’

She was exhausted. God, he was so energetic and such a good sexual partner. If only he wasn’t her junior in the force.

‘Sal? I love you, you know that, don’t you? We don’t talk about it, but I do. You’re not just a great shag, you know.’

‘How romantic. Thanks a lot, Chris.’

He lifted her head and kissed her on the lips. ‘Although you are

that too. I love fucking you.’

‘Shakespeare would be rolling in his grave.’

He laughed. ‘Do you love me then?’

She was silent. She did but didn’t want to say the words. What would come of them if she did? Where could they go in this relationship?

‘Sal? Do you?’

‘Oh Christ, Chris. Even if I do, we can’t do much more than we’re doing now. We can’t ever be an official couple, you know. Not with both of us in the force. Muga knows and keeps quiet but, if it got out officially, one of us would have to transfer.’

‘I know that but do you?’

She sighed and kissed him once more.

‘Yes. Happy now?’

‘Yep. But I am going to have to fuck you again, you know that, don’t you?’

Getting on her knees and turning round she replied, ‘Yeah, I know that.’
